Meteor Awards No More?

Written November 10, 2011. Platforms and services described here have changed. This is kept as a record, not as current advice.

Irish mobile phone company Meteor have just announced via their social networks this afternoon that they will no longer be backing the Meteor Music Awards, the annual music awards which had become a central fixture in Irish musical calendars. A short statement on the company’s Facebook page read: After 10 great rockin’ years, capturing thousands of music memories and raising over €1 million for charities, we have decided to take a break, and not produce The Meteor Ireland Music Awards this year.

Thanks to everyone involved in the Meteors over the years and a huge thanks to you guys for coming along. The announcement marks a pause in, if not the end to, what has been a successful sponsorship for the mobile phone company for the past decade. It’s unclear whether the company will resume the event in 2012 but is highly unlikely that a new awards sponsor would come on board in 2011 to create a replacement event given the strong association with Meteor and the integral role the brand had in the running and organisation of the awards.

No reason has been given for the ‘break’ but likely factors include the high production costs involved. The Metoer Awards has grown from it’s inception in 2001 to become the biggest music awards in Ireland and was televised by national broadcaster RTE.
