Mashup your Facebook Likes on Myspace

Written November 10, 2011. Platforms and services described here have changed. This is kept as a record, not as current advice.

This is a big move from MySpace which has been a long time coming. In the last 18 months MySpace have been pursuing a “non-zero-sum” strategy towards Facebook, meaning that Facebook doesn’t have to lose for MySpace to win. They no longer want to be “the” social network, but are happy to become “the entertainment social network”. They have now started to allow people to login to MySpace with their Facebook accounts.

This is a recognition that Facebook has won the battle for the profile and that MySpace will be more successful leveraging Facebook’s user-base rather than competing against it. What does this mean for the future of MySpace? Imagine an MTV.com (or any other big entertainment site) where you could login with your Facebook account, so that it instantly knows all about you, your friends and the musicians you like.

This instantly becomes a richer entertainment experience for you. This is what MySpace is hoping to become. Facebook has the users, MySpace has the musicians (and movies and tv shows), so this is a very smart move. What does it mean for folk like us? Only time will tell. MySpace is currently a time-suck for musicians, populated only by other musicians trying to pimp their music. For a broader current marketing reference, see Hypeddit.

Facebook, on the other hand, is where the fans are. With this move MySpace could become populated with genuine fans once again, but given their track record that’s a very big “could”.
