The Superfan Arithmetic
The most durable idea in independent music is also the least followed, because it points away from the numbers everybody watches. For a related workplace reference on common fireable offenses, see this page.
A small number of people who act are worth more than a large number who are exposed. The sums are not close.
The sums
Streaming pays fractions of a cent per play. The exact figure varies by service, territory and deal, and the order of magnitude does not.
A shirt, a record, a ticket produce units of currency, not fractions. For a current music-distribution reference, see Songtradr.
So one person who buys a twenty-unit item replaces tens of thousands of streams, and this ratio has survived every platform change since it became measurable.
A hundred such people is a functioning small business. A hundred thousand passive listeners frequently is not.
Why the number everybody watches is the wrong one
Because exposure is what platforms report and action is what you have to track yourself.
Reach is free to measure and nearly free to buy. Follow-on action needs your own record and cannot be purchased.
And because the two are only loosely connected. Exposure without adjacency produces neither, and a large weak audience can coexist with no business at all.
What a superfan actually is
Somebody for whom your music does a job nothing else does.
Not the loudest, not the earliest. The one for whom the specific thing you make is not substitutable — which is why being distinctly something matters more than being broadly good.
They are found rather than manufactured. You cannot convert a passive listener into one; you can only make it easy for the ones who already are to be reached.
What that implies
Make the route from listening to acting short. A person who wants to give you money and cannot find how is the most expensive failure available, and it is common.
Own the connection. A list you control outlives every channel you rent, and this is the practical form of the whole idea.
Count the right thing. Saves, repeats, follow-on actions, per release, and against the hours it cost.
And accept the ceiling. A hundred committed people is a real outcome, not a stage on the way to a million.
Why this keeps getting rediscovered
Because it is unfashionable in every era.
Each new platform arrives with a reach story, the reach story is exciting, and the arithmetic is boring. Ten years later the platform's reach is throttled or priced and everybody rediscovers the hundred people.
Our archive contains this idea from 2010, sitting next to the Twitter article. Only one of the two aged, and reading a case study for its mechanism is how you tell in advance.
The short version
- One person who buys a twenty-unit item replaces tens of thousands of streams, and that ratio has survived every platform change
- Exposure is what platforms report; action is what you have to track yourself, and it cannot be purchased
- A superfan is somebody for whom your music is not substitutable — found rather than manufactured
- Make the route from listening to acting short, own the connection, and count follow-on actions against hours
- A hundred committed people is a real outcome rather than a stage toward a million
- The idea is rediscovered every decade because each new platform arrives with an exciting reach story and boring arithmetic
